BEST Grants Can Change Lives
Freedom Outpost Ministries came to know Greg (not his real name) from a referral through Brevard’s 211 system (a 24 hour crisis intervention, information and referral service for Brevard County) in December 2002. A veteran of the Air Force, Greg was homeless and unemployed. He also had a chronic drug problem. He stayed in the transitional housing program for over a year until he was able to save some money and re-establish his relationship with his family.
Once more Greg sought assistance from Freedom Outpost Ministries in January 2007. He again found himself unemployed and struggling with a drug problem.
A few months later, Greg requested training in electronic soldering. Freedom Outpost Ministries had just received a grant from Brevard Workforce Development Board, Inc. to deliver training through the BEST grant program and was able to include Greg in soldering training with employees from a local manufacturing company. Through the training opportunity, Greg was able to achieve a world-wide accepted certification.
Greg was able to complete an application for employment with the company also participating in the training and was hired as a Surface Mount Technologies Operator earning $10.00 per hour. Shortly after this he was able to transition out of Freedom Outpost Transitional Housing.
Freedom Outpost Ministry, Brevard Job Link and the company that hired Greg developed a partnership that had a lasting affect on Greg and many others who, through this grant opportunity, shared a positive and life enhancing experience.
